In modern web design, long shadows designs have started to become quite popular. The use of a long shadow effect is not a new phenomenon though. The technique has been used to create dramatic effects in images for years.
In a natural setting, long shadows result when the sun is near the horizon, so it occurs at both dawn and dusk. As a designer, you do not need to get up early or stay up late. You can easily create long shadow effects in Photoshop.
It seems that designers agree on how to use the shadow effect. Web designers are typically incorporating the effects to objects in flat and metro schemes. The shadows themselves are flat, as well, with designers using a color tint with no shading, graduation or fading. Most of the designers utilize the same basic idea, even down to the angle and direction of the shadows. The shadows are often created with a 45 degree angle, and they point at the lower right hand corner. Some designers use 120 degrees though.
